Maverick Tony Award predictions: Bet on 'American Idiot' and 'Red'

May 7, 2010 | 12:27 pm

You can always count on veteran Broadway scribe Leonard Jacobs for some jolting opinions, but he really comes out swinging with his Tony Award predictions that he shares with Gold Derby. Prevailing "wisdom" says best play will be "Next Fall" or "Time Stands Still," but Leonard fearlessly waves a "Red" cloak, matador style. Also, he pooh-poohs the common view that "Memphis" will win best musical. He believes that smart money is on "American Idiot," which was the early front-runner, but then stumbled when its director, actors and choreographer weren't nominated. Check out Leonard's blog Clyde Fitch Report, which is cleverly based on the persona of a now-obscure U.S. playwright who was a superstar in the 1890s. Also, read Leonard's Huffington Post report on protests against cuts in New York State arts spending.
