Poll: Was Chris Brown faking it at the BET Awards?

June 27, 2010 |  9:31 pm

When Chris Brown appeared to fall apart while attempting to perform Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" at the BET Awards, some observers wondered: Was Brown overcome with genuine grief for the loss of Jackson or was he staging a play for sympathy in the hope of being forgiven for beating up Rihanna?

BET Awards Chris Brown news

Or did his breakdown have nothing to do with Jackson or faking a ploy for sympathy? Was he really just overwhelmed that he was back singing legit again at a major industry event?

Chris Brown's performance at the BET Awards was his first major music gig in a long time. He was picked to perform because he's widely considered to be a protégé of Michael Jackson's and there was enormous curiosity over how he'd do — and be greeted by the audience — when he took the stage. If his career is truly over, he might not get a chance like this again to gain sympathetic attention.

After describing what Chris Brown did at the BET Awards, MTV.com solicited comments from readers. Quite a few posters wondered if he was play-acting. A poster named Kelli asked, "Was it for real, or was he trying to get attention for being softer? I'm sure he feels bad about Michael's death, but is he just trying to get away from the bad boy image with the crying thing?"

I just feel the need to say that I think Chris Brown's tears were very genuine and even though no one really knows the reason why he started to cry, the tears were not fake. I am one of the biggest Chris Brown fans in the world and I would appreciate if people would just accept his faults and move on. He is one of the greatest artist of our time and we should be embracing him.

i loveeeee chris browwnn and i think he was not faking at all hes been threw alot yall gotta give him so RESPET THO LIKE FOREALS

He was not faking at all those tears were real

I THINK CHRIS BROWN WAS NOT FAKING AT ALL. HE KNOWS THAT WAT HE DID WAS WRONG AND KNOWS THAT SOME PEOPLE LIKE U R GONNA JUDGE HIM ANYWAYS SO HE REALLY DIDNT CARE. HE WAS JUST SHOWING SOME SYMPATHY FOR MICHAEL AND PROBABLY RELIEF THAT HE WAS BACK ON STAGE! i GUARANTEE U MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO SED HE WAS FAKING, DIDNT REALLY LIKE CHRIS IN THE 1RST PLACE. THANKS!

Can an artist not pay homage and cry to someone he truely looked up to without being judged?

In this day and age of REALITY TV shows, I guess we have to ask if tears are "real." But my question is, "What do you mean by REAL?"

I saw the show, the tears looked real to me. Chris appeared to be break-down. Now, I don't believe Chris said WHY he was crying. So where does the questioning of their validity come in to play?

CHRIS MAY HAVE CRIED BECAUSE:
1. He was happy to be back on stage, he has been denied since his Feb. 2009 incident.
2. He actually thought about what the words in "Man in the Mirror" meant, and he felt some kind of way about it.
3. Chris danced too hard...and hurt himself...and charlie horses hurt..
4.His pants were too tight.
5.He was flustered after dancing so hard, and merely forgot the words to "Man In The Mirror."

...I mean I could go on and on. But there are plenty of reasons WHY Chris was crying. Who are we to judge?

My question is WHEN DO WE GIVE THIS KID A BREAK??

READ my story, tell me what you think: "WHY IS CHARLIE SHEEN BETTER THAN CHRIS BROWN?"

http://www.alumniroundup.com/2010/06/op-ed-why-is-charlie-sheen-better-than-chris-brown/

I dont think Chris Brown would do that on stage at all. Because he got his moves from Jackson and prolly did bad things in his life but all i know he must regret what he did. wow, People should know what he is going threw right now. Just lieve him alone and le him do him, seriously!

I cant believe that in this day we are polling whether or not Chris Browns tears were for real???????? We lost an amazing performer in which I will never again see in my life time!!! Thank you Chris for an amazing performance. Does anybody criticize Charlie Sheen for his performances????? I hate to bring about the race card but for real he didn't get a quarter of the attention Chris Brown got and people are still watching his show. Wake up America don't get involved in petty poll s--t it's only fueling the fire for mistreatment.. God Bless you Chris for only GOD can judge though

Chris brown was definitly notg fakingq it at alll ; micheal jackson is his idol and he was feelingq some time away at the time &+ him and rihanna aren't thru yet der still datinqg soo why would he need to cry ovaa that situation for .

I understandd what Chris Brown did in the past was wronq but we cant be stuck in i past its time to move forward . I think Chris Brown truthly meant the tears . I almost started to cry. Wdf !! Charlie Sheen ? Seriously . Chris Brown ? Nothing alike. It was one mistake seriouly Rhianana had to do sumthinq , said sumthing to tick him off and to this day I still dont like her ! Lovee her Music thouqh . But as a person thats a hell noo ! Let the people get ther Shine qot damit !

I wish people get over this. NO ONE condones what he did, but DAMN, how long are you going to ride it! If RIHANNA forgave him and she was the one beaten, EVERYONE else needs to mind their own damn business. She has moved on and so should the rest of the world! It's amazing before this incident, Chris Brown was a poster child. Now since this happened, he's evil. So, he took the opportunity to get up there and cry not because he lost his mentor, happy to be on-stage again, feeling the love from the industry again (because his fans were always there) but because he wants to cry in front of a room of damn near ALL of his peers. I know NO man, BLACK, WHITE, Whatever race who puts his ego aside and cries for attention; On NATIONAL television at that. So sad the people home that has so much to say... If you don't like him, don't support him. But always remember, There are two sides to a story. If this was your son, and he was caught up in a situation like this, you wouldn't condone his behavior but you would want to know the whole story before people started jumping on him, right? And you would want him to grow and learn. If people don't have second chances, what do they have?

Jono,

The difference between Chris Brown and Charlie Sheen is not race, its Chris Brown making a big freaking show out of how he's "redemmed himself" and "become a better person". Charlie Sheen serves his sentence, shuts up and goes back to work.

We are proud of Chris Brown. He did his thing and his heart was in it. This young man is so talented and we really need to leave him alone about his past. We suppose to encourage young people not break them down. Chris Brown embraced Micheal Jackson skills and flowed with it. His performance was phenominal and it really touched millions of people all over this world.

I think the performance was beautiful and moving, I'm sure he wasn't the only one crying in the building. But I'm sure people are still going to think what they want to think about him. I still don't understand why there is so much hate on this poor kid either. He made a mistake, get over it and move on. Rihanna obviously did. What he does with his personal life has nothing to do with his music career, so stop bashing him and give him a break.

think about it for a min. For a lot a ppl they are over Michael Jacksons death, but they are not over Chris Browns Assult. So I mean maybe Chris is over the assult but not over his idols death? But I mean really, just cuz the man was stupid doesent mean he is less talanted... I just think people have a hard time forgving...its just like damn we all probobly screwed up but since this incident is out in the open its alright to burn him on the stake? Rihanna, I'm sorry about what happened to you...there are plenty of other good men out there. Chris...good job trying to move on

i think the american media is very racist. i mean you get a guy like charlie sheen who has on countless times been associated with domestic violence and yet no one makes a big deal about him. its just because chris brown is black which is why is getting so much crap about it. and he on countless of times have apologised. hmmm any apologies from charlie sheen?
i think chris did a wonderful job paying tribute to michael jackson regardless of the whole crying scenario. what an amazing dancer!

I'm disappointed that at a time like this, we as a nation can't put aside the judgement and ridicule during Chris emotional breakdown. What more can you get out of his performance? It is sad to see the polls and negative coverage questioning the sincerity of his performance. Chris, don't know if it matters, but last night you redeemed yourself and NOBODY could of emulated Micheal better. God bless and MUCH success!!!!!

none of the above... it was part michael jackson's death, part abuse scandal, part meaning of the song and most importantly publicity...

Oh yeah, one more thing.....if it wasn't for Michael there would be no Usher, Omarion, Dru Hill, Boyz II Men, Rihanna, Jodeci, Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo, Ciara, Aaliyah, J-Lo, Marques Houston, Beyonce, Tevin Campbell, Jaheim, Jagged Edge, Pretty Ricky......I could go on for days. He made a big impact on these people lives, because without MJ where would they be?

IDK why anyone would think Chris was faking. Not only was that genuine emotion, but he followed it up with a genuine apology.

It's not a coincidence that "Man in the Mirror" touched a nerve because he probably has been going thru a self discovery process very similar to the lyrics of the song since the whole rihanna incident

MOST IMPORTANTLY

Chris Brown isnt that great of an actor...he's been in stomp the yard and this christmas, but neither were very complicated roles to play. I dont think he quite has the ability to cry on que the way he did last night.

God Bless him and may he grow and learn thru this experience

&& i could see the tears running down his face, literally. if you didnt maybe u should watch it again
It made me cry. Ive been apart of TEAMBREEZY since day one, and i ALWAYS will be
No matter what anyone says i kno that performance really came from his heart.
seriously ppl, he dosent need to be judged anymore.
he wants to move on with his life.
That was over a year ago. PPl need to move on and just stop criticising him.
it was the best performance of the night by far and i can tell he ment all of it, and it came from his heart.
I LOVE YOU CHRIS BROWN, ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL, TILL THE DAY I DIE, FOREVER AND ALWAYS.

umm people seriously just need to leave him alone.
HE WASNT CRYING TO GET ATTENTION OR TO MAKE PPL FEEL BAD BOUT HIM.
SERIOUSLY!
wtf is wrong with yu ppl that think tht!!
just watching it u culd tell he was sad about michales death. Michael was Chris inspiration, his idol and hes gone noW, just....gone. IMAGINE HOW HE FEELS BOUT THAT. HE GREW UP TO HIM. THINK BOUT IT.
hes not the kind of person to do somethin like that.
just leave him alone.
is he just being judged on everything now???
hes being judged on cryin now??
WTF.
ive had enough !
WHATEVER ANYONE SAYS I KNO THAT CHRIS WAS CRYIN CAUSE HE WAS HURT AND SAD AND DEPRESSED.
IT MUST HAVE BEEN HARD FOR HIM.

I LOVE CHRIS BROWN, ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL, AND ILL ALWAYS HAVE HIS BAK AND SUPPORT HIM..
GO TEAMBREEZY !!

Chris Brown has no morals. First he beats up Rihanna, then he makes a mockery of the Michael Jackson tribute with this carefully-staged, theatrical "repentance." The only thing Brown feels bad about is that his sales have plummeted. What a shame that so many will swallow Brown's nonsense, celebrating him for exploiting MJ's death.

I think he did great and for him to breakdown like that!that showed that he loved Michael and for them not to give him a chance last year!it was only fair to do it this year!i hope ppl realize ppl do make mistakes and that they should at least give them a chance before they try and ruin someones career!!!

i think he was genuine in his breakdown, and its about time we finally get to see chris brown do what he is best at again.
