Early Emmy predictions: Best comedy series, actor and actress

July 16, 2010 |  2:10 pm
Modern family big bang theory emmys

Below, our experts Chris "Boomer" Beachum, Rob Licuria ( and I rank the nominees for best comedy series, actor and actress. All three of us expect recent Emmy winning streaks to end. "30 Rock" has won best comedy series for three years in a row, but we say "Modern Family" will prevail on Aug. 29. "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin has won for the last two years, but Chris and I think three-time past champ Tony Shalhoub will get a parting gift now that "Monk" has left the airwaves. Rob predicts the gold will go to Jim Parsons ("Big Bang Theory"). Our predictions are largely based upon knowing which sample episodes have been submitted to Emmy judges by the nominees. See the list here.

Comedy Series: I don't mind "30 ROCK" winning again since the show is still funny - funnier than most of the nominees. BUT i think "Modern Family" should take the trophy.
Glee meanwhile is a great show one of my fav this season (GLEEK FTW!) and sometimes the show thought doesnt quite know if it's a comedy or drama. I don't think the show is even worth it to win. I mean the jokes of the show are funny as hell but are they smart, creative, and out of the box jokes? Course not generic jokes at best if you ask me.

Comedy Actor- Jim Parson submission is funny but I'm afraid he will win - but there's more deserving actors out there. DONt hate me on this but Steve Carell should get the emmy. i mean i admit the office is not as it used to be but Steve Carell always give his best on every episode his in, the guy is leaving the show next year why not give him a souvenir

Comedy Actress - It's pretty clear Edie Falco and Lea Michele are the favs here. but I dont think Lea Michele submission is not even comedy well partially ... this could ruin her chances. Toni Collette suprised us last year and she might win since emmy voters are sucker for those multiple characters stuff but if you ask me.. she's not the funniest person out there. Amy Poehler is so underrated that it's so sad. She's constantly funny and the highlight of the Parks and Rec but a lot of people doesn't care. Amy Poehler is a truly funny in camera and behind camera. she's emmy worthy
Tina Fey might shock us again 'cause her submission is quite funny and Julia Dreyfus meanwhile CANCELED SHOW + UNFUNNY SUBMISSION = better luck next time but...

tina fey might be overrated by really she's 4th on the running?
and lea michele "sectionals" submission is better? have you seen that episode, i mean she's funny there but too many drama scenes, no disrespect to glee fans out there , myself is also a "gleek" but lea submission is not emmy worthy enough or even funny enough

here's my thoughts (based on the episode submission and based on emmy voters' taste)

1. edie falco
2. toni collette
2. tina fey
4. amy poehler
5. lea michele
6. Julia Louis-Dreyfus

MY THOUGHTS WHO SHOULD WIN (my choice) : AMY POEHLER - her show is underrated so as her. and her submission is funny and on timing. EMMY VOTERS give her the emmy though I dont mind if EDIE FALCO or TONI C. nor TINA FEY win but they already have an EMMY.

Julia Louis Dreyfuss was shocked herself when she won best actress for the adventures of old christine -- I however was not shocked because she is so great in the show. There is no nostalgia at the emmys -- the voters have to watch tapes of the episodes and I really wish that she had submitted the subway episode rather than the 5 year lease episode. She is a threat and I think the only reason that she is at the bottom is because the show was cancelled. I hate you ABC for not picking up this great show after you had been courting it for two years.

Voters don't care about JLD? How often does a performer get 5 nominations in a row? She could definitely be a threat. I do wish she had submitted a stronger tape though.

I think Glee is more of a contender than everyone is making it out to be. Remember, there are a lot of thespians in the voting academy, and thespians love musicals. At the Oscars everyone knows not to count them out, but at the Emmy's no one is thinking about this because it hardly ever happens.

at first i thought glee wasn't going to win.. but look at all it's nominations.. not all of them deserving. glee's a real threat.. but i am hoping and thinking it will be modern family. if 30 rock wins again.. i might cry. falco will win. i hate that it's heavily based on the fact she was on the sopranos. all the other nominees are deserving except for collette.. only because she won last year and everyone should have a go at it. patiently awaiting for all other predictions! i've started posting mine on a blog as well.

@ Dave:
I actually think Julia has a better chance at winning than Lea Michele or Amy Poehler.

"Glee" isn't going to win. The second half of the season was not as strong as the first.

"Modern Family" will probably win but I would not be surprised by a "30 Rock" repeat just out of laziness -- witness the four-year run in the Outstanding Drama category by "West Wing".

Shalhoub will probably win over Parsons and Baldwin.

Falco will win over Fey and Collette.

@ Dave,
there's no real nostalgia working for Julia Louis Dreyfuss. Her show is mediocre at best and voters never really cared much about it & the nostalgia wins are usually for shows the Academy really loved. Not just the actors.

You really don't think Glee will win? I hope they show the first half of the season and not the 2nd half.

Can you guys post your rankings for the Supporting Categories too?

I'm disappointed that all three put Julia Louis-Dreyfus last - she submitted a very strong tape and there may be some nostalgia about this being her last chance for this series. I'm seeing her as a dark horse, even though I know she won't win!
