Emmy predictions: Comedy series writing and directing

August 17, 2010 |  9:41 am

The series premiere episode of "Glee" is so joyous and entertaining that I find it hard to believe that it won't win the Emmys for comedy writing and direction, but Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria (Awards Heaven) don't agree that it's a cinch in both races. Boomer puts it ahead for direction but not for writing. Rob puts it out front for writing but not directing.

I'd love to hear Mindy Kaling acceptance speech and I know the duel is Family v. Glee this year! HOWEVER,

I believe Emmy Voters will give Matt Hubbard another award for his incredible job with "Anna Howard Shaw Day"!, Family will win Best Comedy Series, Glee the Directing award (for Pilot), The Office's Steve Carrell will be the Best Actor and Carmela Soprano Best Actress. Now everybody is happy!

Despite all the favoritism, the guys from Modern Family will lose for Colfer. And Sofia Vergara will win Lynch's statuette!

"Modern Family" will win the writing category for being a 21st Century answer to the classic American sitcom. "Glee" will win directing, for Ryan Murphy's "Pilot," as a comic series with much more going on visually than any other in this race. "Wheels" may have more showstoppers but Murphy's estbalishment of tone and pace was so crucial to the series not to mention he is a name of the moment with his status as creator of this series and current transition to features (see: J.J. Abrams win for "Lost").

Tom, don't you pay enough attention to writing awards across the spectrum to know that musicals NEVER win writing awards? Since musicals have never really been a factor as a series for the Emmys ("Cop Rock" excluded) look at the Oscars for writing. The last musical screenplay to win an Academy Award was "Gigi" in 1959.

There's no way "Glee" will win for writing and this is coming from a fan of the show.
