If Jeff Bridges wins an Academy Award for portraying Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" 41 years after John Wayne, they will not be the first actors to triumph for the same role. Who did so earlier? Hint, they prevailed in 1972 and 1974 for portraying the same thug at different times of life. To see the answer, click on the "Continue Reading" link below.

ANSWER: For 1972, Marlon Brando won best lead actor as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather." For 1974, Robert De Niro won in the supporting slot as Corleone in "The Godfather, Part II."

Laurence Olivier was nominated for "Henry V" in 1946; ditto Kenneth Branagh in 1989. Both lost.

Peter O'Toole had two failed nominations as Britain's King Henry II: "Becket" (1964) and "The Lion in Winter" (1968).

Among actresses, Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart were both nominated as young and old versions of Rose in "Titanic" (1997). Winslet and Judi Dench were nominated as young and old versions of Iris Murdoch in "Iris" (2001). All lost.

Cate Blanchett lost two bids as Queen Elizabeth I (1998, 2207). Judi Dench won in the supporting race as the virgin queen in "Shakespeare in Love" (1998).
