Gemini Awards nominations are all about the mystery

August 27, 2008 |  3:25 pm

"Murdoch Mysteries," a procedural crime drama set in 1895 Toronto, reaped the most nominations (14) for the 23rd annual Gemini Awards, Canada's equivalent to the Emmys. However, while the show earned eight acting nods in the supporting and guest slots, star Yannick Bisson was snubbed.

As last year's big winner, "Slings & Arrows," is off the air the race for best drama series is wide open. Competing against "Murdoch" are three other crime shows — small town set "Durham County" (13 nods), police patrol "The Border" (9 nods), and spy agency "Intelligence" (nods) — as well as historical drama "The Tudors" (12 nods). While three actors from "The Tudors" are in the running, lead Jonathan Rhys Meyers was left out of the race.

Snubs seem to be a way of life with the Geminis. Last year's comedy winner "Corner Gas" (airing on TBS stateside) returns to that race, thought the cast, which won the ensemble award last year, was overlooked. Also missing for the second year running is the internationally buzzed about "Little Mosque on the Prairie" — a lighthearted look at Muslim life — which picked up only three technical nods. And though news satire "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" earned a nod, the long-lived "Royal Canadian Air Farce" did not.

"Flashpoint," the recent Canadian drama series about a SWAT team that had a successful summer run on CBS, aired outside the eligibility period of May 1, 2007, to April 30, 2008. Winners in a wide array of categories including news and documentaries, sports and children's programming will be honored over three nights, from Oct. 20 to Oct. 22. The glitzier series and acting races will be showcased in a Nov. 28 awardsfest carried on cablecaster E!
