RRcircleLogo Like the various sports halls of fame, the one devoted to rock and roll also announces a long list of nominees from which are culled the eventual inductees. This year's honor roll of 15 artists vying for a place in the Hall of Fame includes nine returning runners-up: the Beastie Boys (nom No. 2), Chic (No. 6), LL Cool J (No. 2), the J. Geils Band (No. 3), Darlene Love (No. 3), Laura Nyro (No. 2), Donna Summer (No. 3), Joe Tex (No. 4) and Chuck Willis (No. 5). The half-dozen newcomers in the hunt for a seal of approval from the 500 voters: Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Neil Diamond, Donovan, Dr. John and Tom Waits.

This is the 26th annual induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In a statement, foundation president and CEO Joel Peresman said, "We believe our nominating committee has put forth a list of artists that truly represent the wide variety of music that defines rock and roll."

To be eligible for inclusion this year, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior ago. The names of the inductees, which usually number five, will be announced in December with the March 14 formal ceremony to be televised live on Fuse from New York's Waldorf-Astoria. Each inductee also will be commemorated at the Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland.
